What are triglycerides?
Triglycerides are the most common form of fat in the human body and in our diet. They consist of a glycerol molecule to which three fatty acid chains are attached. These fatty acids can be saturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated. Together, they form an efficient way to store energy.
You find triglycerides in virtually all fatty foods: butter, margarine, cooking oils, and the fat naturally present in meat or dairy. However, your own body also produces triglycerides, particularly when you consume more calories than you burn. The excess is then stored as triglycerides in the fat tissue, ready to serve as an energy source later.
In the blood, triglycerides circulate bound to proteins, known as lipoproteins. In this way, they are transported to the tissues and organs that need them. As long as the concentration in the blood remains within normal limits, triglycerides play a useful role in your energy metabolism.
Why is it measured?
A triglyceride measurement is part of the so-called lipid spectrum, also known as the blood fat profile. This profile provides insight into the different types of fats circulating in your bloodstream. In addition to triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol are also measured.
Doctors use this profile to assess a patient's cardiovascular risk. High triglyceride levels are frequently seen in combination with low HDL cholesterol, the so-called 'good' cholesterol. This combination increases the risk of atherosclerosis and heart problems.

What do abnormal values mean?
A triglyceride level below 2.0 millimoles per liter is generally considered desirable. Values above this may indicate an increased risk of damage to the blood vessels. With persistently elevated values, triglycerides can accumulate in the walls of the blood vessels and in the liver, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
A significantly elevated value may also indicate a condition such as hypertriglyceridemia, a metabolic disorder in which the body has difficulty breaking down triglycerides. Additionally, contributing factors may include: a diet rich in sugars and simple carbohydrates, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol consumption, or certain medications.
It is important to always assess an abnormal value in the proper context. A single measurement is rarely the whole story. A doctor looks at your entire lipid profile, lifestyle, and any other risk factors to get a clear picture of what the value means for you personally.
When to have it measured?
A triglyceride measurement is recommended as part of a periodic health check, especially if you are over forty or have risk factors such as being overweight, smoking, lack of exercise, or a family history of cardiovascular disease.
