Why women experience heart problems differently

There is a persistent misconception that heart disease is a "men's problem." That is not the case. Women get heart disease just as easily, but the symptoms sometimes present differently. This leads to women seeking help too late more often, or their symptoms being recognized less quickly.

In men, the classic, oppressive chest pain is central. In women, the symptoms of heart failure or a heart attack can be more subtle. Pain on the left side of the chest is certainly not absent in women, but women more frequently report symptoms such as nausea, pain in the jaw, neck, or back, extreme fatigue, and shortness of breath, sometimes without clear chest pain.

In addition, a persistent cough, sometimes with light pink or white sputum, can indicate fluid accumulation in the lungs as a result of heart failure. Cognitive changes, such as forgetfulness or a foggy feeling in the head, are also reported in women with heart problems. Therefore, measure a few times at different moments before drawing conclusions. If the value persistently remains above 140/90 mmHg, make an appointment with your GP. They look not only at the number but also at your broader risk profile: age, weight, and family history.

When is it dangerous and when should you take immediate action? Seek immediate medical help in case of very high blood pressure, especially in combination with symptoms such as severe headache, shortness of breath, chest pain, or blurred vision. This can indicate a hypertensive crisis, in which the heart and blood vessels become acutely overloaded.

How and when do you measure your blood pressure? Preferably measure in the morning, before eating and before caffeine, in a quiet environment and with your arm supported at heart level. A single measurement says little; a few measurements spread over several days provide a much more reliable picture than a single snapshot.
