What is potassium?

Why is potassium measured?

A potassium level is determined for various reasons. If high blood pressure or impaired kidney function is suspected, potassium is a standard part of the blood test. The kidneys largely regulate how much potassium the body retains and how much is eliminated through urine. If this regulation is disrupted, the potassium level may deviate.

Certain medications affect the potassium level in the blood. Some blood pressure or heart medications lower potassium levels, while others increase them. During such treatments, potassium is checked regularly to prevent levels from falling outside a safe range.

What does an abnormal potassium level mean?

Potassium too low: hypokalemia

A potassium level in the blood that is too low is called hypokalemia. Many people initially notice little of it, but fatigue and a lack of energy can be early signs. As the deficiency increases, muscle cramps or muscle weakness may occur. In severe cases, a low potassium level can also affect the heart rhythm.

There are multiple possible causes. Persistent vomiting or severe diarrhea can lead to the loss of salts, including potassium. Regularly eating large quantities of licorice can also lower potassium levels, because licorice affects the hormonal balance that regulates potassium. It is noteworthy that in some forms of kidney damage, a low rather than a high potassium level may occur.

Too high potassium: hyperkalemia

A potassium level that is too high is called hyperkalemia. With a slightly elevated level, there are usually no symptoms. If the level rises sharply, symptoms such as nausea, muscle weakness, and cardiac arrhythmias may occur. This latter complication makes it important to treat a severely elevated potassium level quickly.

The most common cause of an elevated potassium level is impaired kidney function. When the kidneys filter less effectively, potassium is excreted less efficiently and accumulates in the blood. However, certain medications, adrenal gland disorders, and extensive tissue or muscle damage can also cause the value to rise.

Symptoms of impaired kidney function

When the kidneys gradually begin to function less well, symptoms develop insidiously. They often only become visible when kidney function has already significantly declined and waste products are accumulating in the blood. Possible signs include reduced appetite, nausea, fatigue, itching, and reduced muscle strength. In that case, an abnormal potassium level can be an early indicator for further investigation.

When is it useful to have potassium measured?

If you have blood pressure complaints, are taking medications that can affect the potassium balance, or if there are questions about your kidney function, measuring potassium is a logical step. Based on the results, a general practitioner can assess whether adjustments to your treatment or diet are desirable.
