Why is albumin measured?

What do abnormal values ​​mean?

A reduced albumin level in the blood can have various causes. In kidney diseases, albumin is lost through the urine, a process that can cause nephrotic syndrome. In this case, fluid flows from the blood vessels into the tissues, leading to visible edema, for example in the feet, ankles, fingers, or face.

Liver diseases are another common cause. When the liver is damaged or functioning poorly, it produces less albumin. This can occur with liver inflammation, cirrhosis, or other liver disorders. In that case, a low albumin level may also be accompanied by other abnormal liver values.

Additionally, a lack of protein in the diet or poor absorption of nutrients in the intestines can lead to a lower albumin concentration. Finally, prolonged inflammation in the body can reduce albumin production because the liver then prioritizes other proteins.

High albumin level

An elevated albumin level is almost always caused by dehydration. When the body contains too little fluid, the concentration of all blood components increases, including albumin. The value is then relatively high, not because more albumin has been produced, but because there is less fluid in the blood.

Dehydration can be caused by insufficient drinking, excessive sweating, fever, or persistent vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms such as thirst, headache, fatigue, and a dry mouth can indicate dehydration. Sufficient fluid intake resolves this quickly in most cases.

When is it advisable to have albumin measured?

Measuring albumin is useful if you have symptoms that may indicate kidney problems or liver damage, such as persistent fatigue, unexplained swelling, or a distended abdomen. An albumin measurement is also a logical step in the presence of signs of malnutrition or poor intestinal absorption.

People with a known kidney or liver condition often have albumin checked periodically to see how the disease is developing and whether the treatment is effective. It is also a useful marker in broader health check-ups where liver and kidney function are assessed.
