What is magnesium?
Magnesium is a mineral that occurs naturally in your body and is essential for a large number of biological processes. It is involved in more than three hundred enzymatic reactions, which means that the body constantly needs it to function properly.
You obtain magnesium mainly from food. Green leafy vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, and shellfish are good sources. Tap water also contains magnesium, although the amount varies by region: in areas with harder water, the content is generally higher.
The recommended daily intake differs by age group and gender. Women and girls aged fourteen and older need approximately 280 milligrams per day. For men and boys of the same age, the recommendation is 350 milligrams per day.
What is magnesium important for?
Magnesium has a broad function in the body. It supports the transmission of nerve signals and helps muscles contract and relax. Without sufficient magnesium, these processes become disrupted, which you can notice immediately in your body.
In addition, magnesium plays a role in energy metabolism. It helps convert nutrients into usable energy, a process that continues continuously in every cell of your body. Magnesium is also involved in the building and maintenance of strong bone tissue, together with calcium and vitamin D.
Finally, magnesium influences blood sugar regulation. The mineral contributes to insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. Some studies also suggest a link to mental well-being: adequate magnesium intake may contribute to better sleep quality and a calmer feeling, although more research is needed to fully confirm this.
What do abnormal values mean?
Magnesium too low: hypomagnesemia
A magnesium deficiency in the blood, medically referred to as hypomagnesemia, is not common in healthy people who eat a varied diet. Nevertheless, there are situations in which the level can become too low. Prolonged diarrhea, severe malnutrition, chronic alcohol use, and the use of water pills (diuretics) are known causes. Intestinal disorders in which nutrient absorption is impaired, such as those resulting from certain intestinal surgeries or fat malabsorption, can also cause magnesium levels to drop.
Symptoms that may indicate a deficiency include muscle cramps, tremors, fatigue, irritability, and in more severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. In children, a prolonged deficiency can affect growth. Behavioral changes and depressive feelings are also associated with low magnesium levels, although a combination of factors often plays a role in these cases.
Too high magnesium: hypermagnesemia
An elevated magnesium level in the blood, hypermagnesemia, occurs less frequently than a deficiency. The kidneys normally regulate the excess, but this is not done effectively in cases of kidney function loss. Chronic kidney failure is therefore a common cause. Long-term use of magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives can also increase levels. Furthermore, hypothyroidism, also known as myxedema, can contribute to elevated magnesium levels.
With mild elevation, there are sometimes no symptoms at all. With significantly elevated levels, symptoms such as muscle weakness, low blood pressure, nausea, confusion, and in severe cases, an irregular heartbeat may occur. Any deviation outside the reference range requires assessment by a doctor.
When is a magnesium test useful?
A measurement of blood magnesium levels can be helpful if you have symptoms that could indicate a deficiency or excess. Examples include persistent muscle cramps, unexplained fatigue, sleep problems, or a restless feeling without a clear cause. Regularly monitoring your levels is also advisable if you are taking medications that affect magnesium levels, such as diuretics or antacids.
In cases of known kidney problems, chronic alcohol use, or intestinal disorders where nutrient absorption is impaired, a doctor may decide to include magnesium levels in a broader blood test. This way, you get a complete picture of how your body functions.
