What are thrombocytes?
Thrombocytes, also commonly known as platelets, are small, irregularly shaped blood cells without a nucleus. They are continuously produced in the bone marrow and subsequently released into the bloodstream, where they remain active for an average of seven to ten days.
Their primary task is to protect the body against blood loss. As soon as a blood vessel is damaged, the thrombocytes react extremely quickly. They attach to the damaged vessel wall and clump together into a kind of plug, the so-called thrombus. This process is called primary hemostasis and is the first step in blood clotting.
Without sufficient functioning thrombocytes, even a minor wound could lead to severe blood loss. Conversely, too many or overactive platelets can contribute to the unwanted formation of blood clots in the vessels.
What is the platelet count measured for?
The number of platelets in the blood is expressed as the number of cells per microliter of blood. This measurement is a standard part of a complete blood count, one of the most frequently performed blood tests in healthcare.
A doctor or healthcare provider orders a blood count analysis to get a first impression of a person's overall health. The platelet count provides information about the blood's ability to clot. Both a count that is too low and one that is too high can indicate an underlying condition.

What can abnormal values mean?
Too many platelets: thrombocytosis

- Certain forms of cancer

Too few platelets: thrombocytopenia

- Autoimmune diseases in which the body produces antibodies that break down its own platelets

- Use of medicines such as aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Certain forms of cancer that disrupt bone marrow function

When is it useful to have platelets measured?

The platelet count is also checked regularly when starting or monitoring certain medications, or when someone has a disease that can affect blood production.
